The location of the center was once an industrial landscape located on the Whittier Peninsula outside of German Village. The restored fields and natural area is a 10 minute walk from down town Columbus. Renovation of this facility is a continuing effort to this day. You can help by volunteering or becoming a member of the center to further preserve this natural local treasure. Nature surrounds the center. It is located within The Scioto Audubon Metro Park, on the Scioto River. The grand opening for this city endeavor was in August 2009. The center is a model of excellence for building sustainable environments for living and working. It is a green facility of 18,400 square feet built with recycled construction materials. Heating and cooling are provided by alternative energy sources.
You'll be amazed when you see the "Rain Chain". An incredible innovative idea of catching rain water from the roof of the facility down a chain into a huge basin and in turn re-circulating the rain catch to provide water and green energy for the facility. "Rain Gardens", are another fantastic way of catching rain water off the buildings roof and grounds, re-directing it back to the facility and utilizing it as green energy. You will be fascinated over and over again while visiting this center!
Inside the center is truly an experience in its self!
As soon as you walk through the doors you feel the natural green area
offered to everyone who visits! Windows offer views of almost a 360 degree area of the entire green oasis and wildlife area. You have access to important and interesting
information about the facility and the surrounding environment. It
takes pride in offering vital educational services to public schools.
One of the main focuses of the center is teaching environmental
awareness education to all grade levels and is designed to improve the
academic performance of students and schools in all academic content
areas. Educational programs include, "Focus In The Field", "Small Wonders", "Tiny Trackers", Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, After School Programs, Adventure Camp, Family, Adult, and Children's Programs and Special Events.
What comes to my mind while visiting the center is, "We live among Nature and Nature lives among us!"

Also on November 12th, 2011 - Christopher Canyon - Children's
Book Illustrator, in a collective endeavor with Jeanette Canyon, did a presentation at the Audubon Center, and gave
details of his style and inspiration for creating his children's books and illustrations. He also as an artist likes to take required time to focus and study the subject matter for illustrations on his books. Together, Jeanette and Christopher take field trips, and keep journals with information pertaining to their books subject. He has had the opportunity to draw, paint, and create incredible pictures with inspiration from, "John Denver's" music. Adapted & Illustrated by, Christopher Canyon - "Take Me Home, Country Roads", is a beautiful and heart felt story giving the reader insight to the words of the song, by John Denver, through Christopher Canyon's art work. It was an extra treat having Christopher Canyon pick up his guitar and accompany the song singing along with his art work process, page by page. It made me happy and I felt the love in the story for family & friends! His other works include:
"Sunshine On My Shoulders" - Adapted & Illustrated by, Christopher Canyon "Grandma's Feather Bed" - Adapted & Illustrated by, Christopher Canyon "Ancient Rhymes - A Dolphin Lullaby" - Adapted & Illustrated by, Christopher Canyon
